Driver Behavior and Gap-Acceptance Characteristics at Roundabouts in California

and follow-up headway values based on a comprehensive evaluation of roundabouts throughout the United States. The recommended operational models by NCHRP 3-65 will be incorporated into the next update of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM). Although this NCHRP study contains a significant amount of data (including more than 500 h of video at various roundabout locations), the data do not include any sites from the state of California. As a result, the critical headway and follow-up headway from NCHRP 3-65 may or may not be representative of California conditions. Therefore, the results presented in this paper have significant value for roundabout design and operational analysis in California.
